Laser Therapy

At the Whole Life Health Center we use Low-Level Laser Therapy as both a stand-alone therapy and as part of a combination of therapies specifically recommended in individualized care plans.

What is Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)?

Low level laser therapy is an FDA approved low intensity laser therapy that uses low levels of light  to stimulate healing activity at a cellular level to promote healing and reduction of inflammation.

What does that actually mean?

First, it is important to know that there are many different types of lasers with different purposes.  When people think of lasers they typically think of laser pointers used in presentations or as a cutting tool used in surgical procedures.  Each operates at a different intensity level and has different classifications.

Whereas surgical lasers use heat to super heat tissues to cut or remove tissue, low level laser therapy uses a level of light which does not create any sort of heat.  As a matter of fact, low level laser therapy is often referred to as cold laser therapy.

Low level laser therapy (LLLT) delivers specific light energy to damaged cells such as  nerve, muscle, cartilage, ligament, tendons, etc. in the form of photons which increases blood flow and stimulates the natural healing process.   This helps decrease pain and inflammation and promotes healing of tissues and nerves.

What Conditions Can Be Treated with Low Level Laser Therapy?

“According to the more than 4000 studies on pub.med.gov, it can be concluded that the majority of laboratory and clinical studies have demonstrated that LLLT has a positive effect on acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain.” US National Library of Medicine/National Institutes of Health

Low Level Light Therapy has been used by medical doctors, physical therapists, and chiropractors to help the healing process and reduce pain and inflammation in a wide range of issues.  These include:

  • Neck pain
  • Lower Back pain
  • Swollen or herniated discs
  • Knee pain
  • Tennis and Golfer’s Elbow
  • Pain associated with muscle spasms
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Arthritis pain
  • Fibromyalgia pain
  • Treatment of minor injuries and sprains
  • Ligament sprains
  • Muscle strains
  • Tendonitis
  • Bursitis
  • Etc.

What to Expect During Low Level Laser Therapy Treatments?

If Dr. Alexander recommends Low Level Laser Therapy either as part of an overall chiropractic care plan or as a standalone therapy, you will be directed to our Therapy Suite where you will either lay down or sit up, depending on where your area of injury, pain, or inflammation is. The therapist will position the laser light beams at the affected area.  The usual treatment length is 10 minutes.  If there are multiple areas that need treatment, each area will take between 5-10 minutes.

Because of the nature of the low level laser, you will not feel anything at all but it will be working its therapeutics deep within your cells to promote relief from pain and inflammation and help heal any injuries.

At the Whole Life Health Center we use an Erchonia low level laser for our laser therapy treatments.  Erchonia was one of the first low level lasers to be approved by the FDA for musculoskeletal applications.
